وَإِذْ قُلْنَا لِلْمَلَائِكَةِ اسْجُدُوا لِآدَمَ فَسَجَدُوا إِلَّا إِبْلِيسَ قَالَ أَأَسْجُدُ لِمَنْ خَلَقْتَ طِينًا

Sahih International

(17:61) And [mention] when We said to the angles, "Prostrate to Adam," and they prostrated, except for Iblees. He said, "Should I prostrate to one You created from clay?"

Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali and Muhammad Muhsin Khan,

(17:61) And (remember) when We said to the angels: "Prostrate unto Adam." They prostrated except Iblis (Satan). He said: "Shall I prostrate to one whom You created from clay?"

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

(17:61) And when We said unto the angels: Fall down prostrate before Adam and they fell prostrate all save Iblis, he said: Shall I fall prostrate before that which Thou hast created of clay?

Abdullah Yusuf Ali

(17:61) Behold! We said to the angels: "Bow down unto Adam": They bowed down except Iblis: He said, "Shall I bow down to one whom Thou didst create from clay?"

(17:61) And when We said to the angels: Make obeisance to Adam; they made obeisance, but Iblis (did it not). He said: Shall I make obeisance to him whom Thou hast created of dust?

(17:61) And (recall another instance of arrogance and insubordination) when We said to the angels: "Prostrate yourselves before Adam!" they prostrated themselves, but Iblis did not; he said: "Shall I prostrate myself before one whom You created of clay?"
