Quran surah An Nisa 22 in english translation

Sahih International

(4:22) And do not marry those [women] whom your fathers married, except what has already occurred. Indeed, it was an immorality and hateful [to Allah] and was evil as a way.

Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali and Muhammad Muhsin Khan,

(4:22) And marry not women whom your fathers married, except what has already passed; indeed it was shameful and most hateful, and an evil way.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

(4:22) And marry not those women whom your fathers married, except what hath already happened (of that nature) in the past. Lo! it was ever lewdness and abomination, and an evil way.

Abdullah Yusuf Ali

(4:22) And marry not women whom your fathers married,- except what is past: It was shameful and odious,- an abominable custom indeed.

Mohammad Habib Shakir

(4:22) And marry not woman whom your fathers married, except what has already passed; this surely is indecent and hateful, and it is an evil way.

Dr. Ghali

Ali Unal

(4:22) And do not marry the women whom your fathers married – except what has happened (of that sort) in the past (before your conversion: such occurrences are forgivable provided you rectify your conduct and terminate any such contract of marriage). This was indeed a shameful deed and hateful thing, and how evil a way!

Amatul Rahman Omar

(4:22) And marry not those women whom your fathers had married, except what had already passed (- you shall not be called to account for what you did in the past, only you have to divorce them now)

Literal

(4:22) And do not marry what your fathers married from the women, except what had preceded/passed, that it was an enormous/atrocious deed , and abhorrence/hateful , and (it is an) evil way/path.

Ahmed Ali

(4:22) And do not wed the women your fathers had wed. What happened in the past is now past: It was lewd and abhorrent, and only the way of evil.

A. J. Arberry

(4:22) And do not marry women that your fathers married, unless it be a thing of the past; surely that is indecent and hateful; an evil way.

Abdul Majid Daryabadi

(4:22) And wed not of women those whom your fathers had wedded, except that which hath already passed. Verily it hath been an indecency and an abomination and an evil way:

Maulana Mohammad Ali

(4:22) And how can you take it when one of you has already gone in to the other and they have taken from you a strong covenant?

Muhammad Sarwar

(4:22) Do not marry, from now on, the ex-wives of your fathers for that custom was sinful, loathsome, and abominable.

Hamid Abdul Aziz

(4:22) And all married women (are forbidden unto you), save such as your right hands possess (captives of war) - It is a decree of Allah for you. But lawful for you are all beyond these. So seek them with your wealth in honest marriage and not lust. But such of them from whom you seek comfort, give them their portions as a duty; and there is no crime in what you do by mutual agreement after the duty has been done. Verily, Allah is ever Knower and Wise.

Faridul Haque
