Sahih International

(32:21) And we will surely let them taste the nearer punishment short of the greater punishment that perhaps they will repent.

Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali and Muhammad Muhsin Khan,

(32:21) And verily, We will make them taste of the near torment (i.e. the torment in the life of this world, i.e. disasters, calamities, etc.) prior to the supreme torment (in the Hereafter), in order that they may (repent and) return (i.e. accept Islam).

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

(32:21) And verily We make them taste the lower punishment before the greater, that haply they may return.

Abdullah Yusuf Ali

(32:21) And indeed We will make them taste of the Penalty of this (life) prior to the supreme Penalty, in order that they may (repent and) return.

Mohammad Habib Shakir

(32:21) And most certainly We will make them taste of the nearer chastisement before the greater chastisement that haply they may turn.

Dr. Ghali

(32:21) And We will indeed let them definitely taste of the lowlier torment, (i.e; Punishment in this life) lesser (Or: other than) than the greater, that possibly they would return.

Ali Unal

(32:21) However (before that supreme punishment) We will most certainly make them taste the lower kinds of punishment (in the world), so that they may (repent their ways) and return.

Amatul Rahman Omar

(32:21) And of course We will let them suffer the minor and nearer punishment before the greater punishment befalls them so that they may turn to Us (in repentance).

Literal

(32:21) And We will make them taste/experience (E) from the torture the nearest , other than the torture the greatest , maybe/perhaps they return.

Ahmed Ali

(32:21) But We shall make them taste the affliction of this world before the greater torment, so that they may retract.

A. J. Arberry

(32:21) And We shall surely let them taste the nearer chastisement, before the greater; haply so they will return.

Abdul Majid Daryabadi

(32:21) And surely We shall make them taste of the smaller torment prior to the greater torment, that haply they may yet return.

Maulana Mohammad Ali

(32:21) As for those who believe and do good deeds, for them are Gardens, a refuge -- an entertainment for what they did.

Muhammad Sarwar

(32:21) We shall certainly make them suffer worldly torment before suffering the great torment so that perhaps they may return to Us.

Hamid Abdul Aziz

(32:21) And as for those who transgress, their abode is the Fire; whenever they desire to go forth from it they shall be brought back into it, and it will be said to them, "Taste the chastisement of the fire which you called a lie."

Faridul Haque

(32:21) And We shall indeed make them taste the smaller punishment before the greater punishment, so that they may return.

Talal Itani

(32:21) We will make them taste the lesser torment, prior to the greater torment, so that they may return.

Ahmed Raza Khan

(32:21) And We shall indeed make them taste the smaller punishment before the greater punishment, so that they may return.

Wahiduddin Khan

(32:21) And most surely We will make them taste a lesser punishment before the greater punishment, so that perhaps they may return to Us in repentance.

Safi-ur-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri

(32:21) And verily, We will make them taste of the near lighter torment prior to the greater torment, in order that they may return.

Ali Quli Qarai

(32:21) We shall surely make them taste the nearer punishment prior to the greater punishment, so that they may come back.

Hasan al-Fatih Qaribullah and Ahmad Darwish
