Quran surah Hud 118 in english translation

Sahih International

(11:118) And if your Lord had willed, He could have made mankind one community; but they will not cease to differ.

Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din al-Hilali and Muhammad Muhsin Khan,

(11:118) And if your Lord had so willed, He could surely have made mankind one Ummah [nation or community (following one religion only i.e. Islam)], but they will not cease to disagree,

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall

(11:118) And if thy Lord had willed, He verily would have made mankind one nation, yet they cease not differing,

Abdullah Yusuf Ali

(11:118) If thy Lord had so willed, He could have made mankind one people: but they will not cease to dispute.

Mohammad Habib Shakir

(11:118) And if your Lord had pleased He would certainly have made people a single nation, and they shall continue to differ.

Dr. Ghali

(11:118) And if your Lord had (so) decided, He would indeed have made mankind one nation; and (i.e; but) they do not cease differing (among themselves).

Ali Unal

(11:118) If your Lord had so willed (and withheld from humankind free will), He would have made all humankind one single community (with the same faith, worldview, and life-pattern). But (having free choice) they never cease to differ (and follow diverse paths diverging from the Straight Path),

Amatul Rahman Omar

(11:118) Had your Lord (enforced) His will He would have certainly made the whole of mankind one community, but (since He did not like to enforce His will upon people) they would not cease to differ.

Literal

(11:118) And if your Lord willed/wanted He would have made the people one nation, and they still/continue differing/disagreeing .

Ahmed Ali

(11:118) But if your Lord had pleased He could have made all human beings into one community of belief. But they would still have differed from one another,

A. J. Arberry

(11:118) Had thy Lord willed, He would have made mankind one nation; but they continue in their differences

Abdul Majid Daryabadi

(11:118) And had thy Lord Willed, He would surely have made mankind of one community, and they will not cease differing.

Maulana Mohammad Ali

(11:118) And thy Lord would not destroy the towns unjustly, while their people acted well.

Muhammad Sarwar

(11:118) Had your Lord wanted, He would have made all people one united nation. They still have different beliefs

Hamid Abdul Aziz

(11:118) In truth your Lord did not destroy the communities unjustly while they were doing right. (Or for a few or minor wrong-doings, or while there were few wrong-doers, or while they had the potentiality to mend).

Faridul Haque

(11:118) And had your Lord willed, He would have made mankind one nation - and they will always keep differing.

Talal Itani

(11:118) Had your Lord willed, He could have made humanity one community, but they continue to differ.

Ahmed Raza Khan

Safi-ur-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri

(11:118) And if your Lord had so willed, He could surely have made mankind one Ummah, but they will not cease to disagree.

Ali Quli Qarai

(11:118) Had your Lord wished, He would have made mankind one community; but they continue to differ,

Hasan al-Fatih Qaribullah and Ahmad Darwish
